Optomap Scans Performed by a Longmont, CO, Optometrist

Your eyes consist of more than what you can see on the outside. Internally, your eyes have several components that work together to transfer images to your brain. For the longest time, the only way to view the interior of the eye was through a dilated eye exam, but no longer. With the invention of the Optomap scan, a highly detailed image of the eye’s interior can now be taken using a specialize device. Eagle Vision & Eye Clinic, serving Longmont, CO and the surrounding region, is proud to provide Optomap scans as part of our comprehensive eye exams. Not all patients are a candidate for the Optomap.  Your doctor will decide if this technology is right for you.

General Information about Optomap Scans

An Optomap scan is used by our optometrist to view the back of your eye, one part of which is the retina. When you get an Optomap exam, our optometrist gets to see more than 80 percent of your retina, allowing for more informed and detailed examinations and diagnoses.

What to Expect During an Optomap Exam

The invention of the Optomap provides a clear innovation to the eye examination process.  Instead of relying on dilation drops to dilate a patient’s eyes, the Optomap can take a high resolution photo of the eye’s interior without the need for a patient’s eyes to be dilated. It’s as simple as sitting down in front of the machine and looking into specialized camera lens.  Each image only takes about 1/4 of a second to obtain. You'll notice a flash of light, which means the machine, took the image. Then, we repeat the same process on your other eye. Next, our optometrist looks at both images and determines if you have any issues with your retina.

Benefits of Optomap

One of the main benefits of having an Optomap examination performed by our optometrist is that we can diagnose conditions in your eye that we wouldn't be able to if we couldn't see inside of your eye. It's possible for eye problems to occur and not cause symptoms until they progress to a point where the damage is irreversible. Another benefit of this particular test is that it's painless and quick. The test results are accurate. Unlike traditional retina testing, we don't need to use an eye drop that dilates your pupils. Those eye drops because sensitivity and blurry vision, which can hinder your ability to drive yourself, home after the test. With Optomap, you can leave our office without needing someone to take you home.
