Understanding Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease that occurs because of increased pressure within the eyes. The high pressure can cause damage to the optic nerve, which is critical for vision. Aging increases the risk for glaucoma, as does heredity, severe nearsightedness or farsightedness, and certain medical conditions. Individuals of Asian, African, or Hispanic heritage are at higher risk for the disease.

Symptoms of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is known as a thief of vision" because there are no symptoms in the early stages. However, as the disease progresses, individuals may notice poor peripheral vision or blank spots in central vision. In some cases, a vision emergency can occur.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Glaucoma

During your regular eye exams, our optometrist will use special equipment to test the pressure in the eyes that could indicate glaucoma.

If glaucoma is suspected, our eye doctor will prescribe eye drops that must be used daily to reduce eye pressure. Oral medications and laser surgery are treatments that are also available to glaucoma patients.
